Groin Hernias come in different types. Generally referred to as "Inguinal hernias," these repairs are important to preserve long term function, and prevent bulging from a weak spot in the abdominal wall. The key to surgery is using an approach (and choosing the right surgeon) with the highest success rate, and lowest complication rate.  

An inguinal hernia can be labeled “direct” or “indirect” depending on how and when it forms. Risk factors such as age, gender, and activity level impact these.

Every surgeon should also carefully check for femoral hernias which can be "hidden" deeper in the groin. These types of hernias are most successfully identified using minimally invasive approaches.
